The Abbasid Caliphate The Abbasid Caliphate, which ruled most of the Muslim world from Baghdad in what is now Iraq, lasted from 750 to 1258 A.D. It was the third Islamic caliphate and overthrew the Umayyad Caliphate to take power in all but the western-most fringe of Muslim holdings at that time- Spain and Portugal, known then as the al-Andalus region. After they defeated the Ummayads, with significant Persian assistance, the Abbasids decided to de-emphasize ethnic Arabs and recreate the Muslim caliphate as a multi-ethnic entity. As part of that reorganization, in 762 they moved the capital from Damascus, in what is now Syria, northeast to Baghdad, not far from Persia in present-day Iran. Early Period of the New Caliphate Early in the Abbasid period, Islam exploded across Central Asia, although usually the elites converted and their religion trickled down gradually to ordinary people. This, however, was not conversion by the sword. Incredibly, just one year after the fall of the Umayyads, an Abbasid army was fighting against the Tang Chinese in what is now Kyrgyzstan, in the  Battle of Talas River  in 759. Although Talas River seemed like just a small skirmish, it had important consequences- it helped to set the boundary between the Buddhist and Muslim spheres in Asia and also allowed the Arab world to learn the secret of paper-making from captured Chinese artisans. The Abbasid period is considered a Golden Age for Islam. Abbasid caliphs sponsored great artists and scientists and great medical, astronomical, and other scientific texts from the classical period in Greece and Rome were translated into Arabic, saving them from being lost. While Europe languished in what was once called its Dark Ages, thinkers in the Muslim world expanded upon the theories of Euclid and Ptolemy. They invented algebra, named stars like Altair and Aldebaran and even used hypodermic needles to remove cataracts from human eyes. This was also the world that produced the stories of the Arabian Nights- the tales of Ali Baba, Sinbad the Sailor, and Aladdin came from the Abbasid era. The Fall of the Abbasid The Golden Age of the Abbasid Caliphate ended on February 10, 1258, when Genghis Khans grandson, Hulagu Khan, sacked Baghdad. The Mongols burned the great library in the Abbasid capital and killed the Caliph Al-Mustasim. Between 1261 and 1517, surviving Abbasid caliphs lived under Mamluk rule in Egypt, wielding more or less control over religious matters while having little to no political power. The last Abbasid caliph, Al-Mutawakkil III, supposedly handed over the title to the Ottoman Sultan Selim The First in 1517. Still, what was left of the destroyed libraries and scientific buildings of the capital lived on in Islamic culture- as did the pursuit of knowledge and understanding, especially concerning medicine and science. And although the Abbasid Caliphate was considered Islams greatest in history, it would certainly not be the last time a similar rule took over the Middle East.

His arms did not swing at his sides, but hung loosely.† This is effective because Lennie is being compared to an animal, a bear. A massive, sometimes violent creature. The word ‘hung loosely’ shows that he was simple minded in everything he did so he didn’t really think about the things he did. Another word ‘the way a bear drags his paws’ shows that he was compared to a bear because of his strength and movement. Another quote would be â€Å"His huge companion dropped his blankets and flung himself down and drank from the surface of the green pool; drank with long gulps, snorting into the water like a horse. The small man stepped nervously beside him† Lennie being compared to an animal b ut this time, a horse who has to be kept from drinking too much water. It at least shows that he has some responsibility to control the natural world. Another way Steinbeck shows barbarity is with the character Crooks. He gives Crooks’ character a hatred towards the men in the ranch. I know this because it says â€Å"Crooks said sharply, You got no right to come in my room. This heres my room. Nobody got any right in here but me† This is effective because it shows that Crooks didn’t like the other men because of the way they treated him so he has to be barbaric to them. The word ‘sharply’ shows that Crooks actually meant what he said although Lennie was being nice, it could also demonstrate that he wanted to take out his anger to Lennie because he realised Lennie wouldn’t understand what Crooks was actually saying to him. The word ‘nobody got any right in here’ shows that he wanted treat them the exact same way they treated him in the ranch. Crooks is barbaric because he was treated that way so he might aswell treat the others the way they’ve been treating him. In conclus ion I think Of mice and men does present the barbarity and beauty of human nature because the characters always had two sides to them whether they were happy or not so it did make the novel very interesting to read.

As Tayo begins to unravel his own troubled story and is led and is led toward this discovery, the reader is also encouraged on a more expansive level to undertake a similar interpretive journey. Each story is inextricably bound to a virtually endless narrative chain. While reaching an epiphanal moment, a moment of complete clarity, l is by no means guaranteed, by presenting Tayo as an example, Silko at least suggests there is fundamental worth in pursuing and creating stories.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Silko counsels that the story's potential for good or ill should not be easily discounted or dismissed. Ironically, though these transitions, changes in the specific vernacular or ritual may be significant from generation to generation, the underlying theme remains constant: we are inseparable from the universe. I have gained many experiences . There were good and bad experiences . All these experiences have made me more matured and wiser . The most exiting experience I gained was when my father brought my family to Egypt to further his studies . We lived there for six years. During our stay in Egypt, there were many happy experiences. When I arrived in Egypt ,I was seven years old and I couldn’t speak even a word of Arabic . My mother comforted me by saying everything was going to be alright and I would able to assimilate . My father sent me and my siblings to school everyday in our first and second year there . My school was just a walking distance from my home, but we had to cross a busy road . It took us about fifteen minutes to reach the school. My siblings and I went to school without any knowledge of the Arabic language . The first day in school was a miserable day . Everything was different . I could not communicate as I could not undestand Arabic . The girls were friendly but some of them were rough and tough . My first week of school was filled with tears as I was always being bullied by them . As the day passed and my Arabic got bhetter ,the girls who always bullied me became my best friends . There were three of them , Yasmin , Heba and Nada . Actually they were all very kind . We were in the same class from year one to year five . The three girls were very clever ,they easily got full mark or 98% marks for their Mathematics and Arabic language ,but not me . Most Egyptian students work really hard in their studies . I found it difficult to compete . On our third until sixth year in Egypt,my siblings and I went to school by bus . It was also the most exiting experience . The bus was cramped with students ; all like sardines in a tin . Vis was transported back into time when the pharoahs of Egypt ruled the land . The pyramids were enormous and certainly deserved being crowned as one of the seven wonders of the world . The green sea and huge waves of the Maditerranean sea felt like heaven on earth . It was such bliss to be building sandcastles on the white sand . Living in Egypt for six years was really wonderful . Each holiday was spent visiting historical sites and places around Egypt . We have even been to the top of mount Sinai to witness the rise of the morning sun . The view was spectacular and humbling. The beauty of the moment will forever be etched like a drawing in my mind . I will always remember the six years I spent in Egypt fondly in my mind . The moments were the best I ever experienced and I will always treasure them .

The Landlady seems from her physical appearance a sweet, middle aged woman who lives alone running her B&B. â€Å"She seemed terribly nice. † These are the inner thoughts of Billy Weaver, when he first meets the Landlady. Roald Dahl is a very good and clever author, and he uses a clever method to make us feel so suspicious of the Landlady, he contradicts himself when he describes the Landlady and when Billy describes her. He gives her a sinister edge, â€Å"He pressed the bell- and out she popped!It made him jump. † But when billy is thinking about the landlady we can clearly see that in his opinions she is just a sweetheart. â€Å"After all, she not only was harmless—there was no question about that—but she was also quite obviously a kind and generous soul. † On the other hand, Roald Dahl makes us very suspicious of the Landlady, mak ing her say creepy and sinister things all the time, but unfortunately for Billy he doesn’t pick on them. â€Å"There wasn’t a blemish on his body† The main thing he uses is the landlady’s dialogue; it really alerts the reader to the evil lurking within her.One of my favourite things that Roald Dahl does is make the Landlady seem very secure in what she is assaying once she has drunk the tea. Like the remarks about the people in the house. Before he had sipped the tea, she says; â€Å"We have it all to ourselves† But when she knows he has had the poison in the tea she says things like; â€Å"But my dear boy, he never left. He’s [Mr Mulholland is] still here. Mr Temple is also here. They’re on the fourth floor, both of them together. † Another thing I like is the interrupting when Billy is so close to finding out the truth. â€Å"Now wait a minute,† he said. Wait just a minute. Mulholland . . . Christopher Mulholland . . . wasn’t that the name of the Eton schoolboy who was on a walking tour through the West Country, and then all of a sudden . . . † â€Å"Milk? † she said. â€Å"And sugar? † â€Å"Yes, please. And then all of a sudden . . . † â€Å"Eton schoolboy? † she said. â€Å"Oh no, my dear, that can’t possibly be right, because my Mr Mulholland was certainly not an Eton schoolboy when he came to me. † The Landlady is a great book and I really enjoyed reading it because it has this rather dark and sinister edge that I look for in all the books I read.

It was a 90-second television and cinema advertisement, which formed the centre piece of their new ad campaign. It was created and directed by Juan Cabral and starred actor Garon Michael. The campaign itself comprised appearances on billboards, print newspapers and magazines, television and cinema spots, event sponsorships and an internet presence. The entire campaign was handled by the advertising agency Fallon London. Their proposal was to step away from â€Å"push† marketing of the product through traditional advertising means, and instead create a â€Å"pull† for the product by creating entertainment pieces which would appeal to a broader range of consumers The television premiere of the advertisement was on Friday 31 August 2007, during the finale of the eighth series of the United Kingdom reality television show Big Brother. The Gorilla commercial scored by generating high noticeability ratings wherever it was screened on television and this generated huge downloads on the web. Prior to the release of the Gorilla movie Cadbury was having a poor season. Sales were down because of certain PR and other issues that affected the quality of the product, which resulted in the brand dropping in top-of-mind awareness and sales. Analysis of Ad based on Emotional Preferences Parameters 1. Seeing, Hearing and Sensing The ad has a backdrop of Purple colour with golden line. This matched with the packaging colouring scheme of the Cadbury Dairy Milk (CDM) Chocolates. Also it has a lot of musical instruments in the ad. It shows a studio. So whenever a visual sees a set of drum or other musical instruments, it would remind him of this ad, and would intern reflect the joy that CDM could provide. The music used in the ad is to attract the auditory people. It is very slow, rhythmic and measured to grad their attention. The sound of drums is used to create the recall of the ad for them. The ad seemed to target majoring of the people belonging to this emotional preference as the idea of using the product metaphor that Chocolate is about joy and pleasure†. It starts with a soothing sound followed by close up on the gorilla. It shows that the gorilla is breathing as if in a stance. It is feeling something calming and fulfilling. Also the lyrics of the song (I can feel in the air tonight, oh lord. ) reflects feelings. Thus anytime a feeling of joy is there in an individual it would create a recall for the product. 2. People, Places, Activities, Knowledge and Things This ad reflects that when a gorilla can have an experience of delight then anyone who wishes to have to experience ecstasy can consume CDM. Thus this ad doesn’t focus much on â€Å"people† preference of an individual. As chocolate is an impulse purchase and location doesn’t play a role in the buying decision, place preference is not catered. The gorilla is shown to be banging the drums with a lot of energy. This is done to target the activity oriented people. They are generally high on energy and look for things that are enjoyable. The ad also by showing the CDM product only at the end creates an interest level which targets people looking for an intellectual activity. As chocolate is an impulse purchase, not much of involvement is required from the customer. So knowledge plays an insignificant role in purchase. Hence knowledge preference is not addressed in the ad. The gorilla in the ad seems to have a deep association with drums. This addresses to the people with things filter. It shows to them the CDM can provide them the same kind of fulfilment that they get from the things they like. 3. Away from and Towards. The ad clearly shows the amount of pleasure gorilla gets from CDM. Thus it directly addresses to the people belonging to towards preference as they have a tendency to seek pleasure in whatever they buy. The people belonging to the away preference are quite procedural. However the ad doesn’t show any reference to procedural or pattern based purchase. Thus this preference is not addressed. 4. Internal and External. The chocolate consumption is more about self satisfaction. Hence external preference is not addressed. On the other hand, the gorilla is shown to be enjoying his own company. This addresses to the people with internal preference as it shows to them the kind of satisfaction they can get for themselves from CDM. 5. Options and Procedures Gorilla is shown to be the new face of CDM. This is something very new and innovative. Moreover, the gorilla is initially just sitting there almost in a trance when it starts playing the drums almost spontaneously. This would address to people with options preference who by nature are spontaneous and look for new things. The people with procedure preference tend to follow a consistent routine or buying procedure. The ad doesn’t show any such routine and thus doesn’t address such people. 6. Big Picture and Details The ad is very abstract in a way that direct product consumption is nowhere shown. Infact the product is shown only in the end. Thus it only projects the big picture in a metaphorical sense that CDM consumption can bring extreme pleasure. This addresses to the people with big picture filter. However not much detail is shown in the ad, thus people with detail filter are not addressed. 7. Active and Passive The ad initially shows that the gorilla is relaxed and is waiting for something to happen. This part grasps the attention of the people having passive filter. Then suddenly he gets stimulated and starts drumming. Moreover, he is bouncing with energy while drumming. This part targets people with active filter. 8. Response to change The ad is a totally new concept with a gorilla as its lead. Surprisingly no words used in it to promote the product. Moreover, the product is nowhere shown directly in the ad. It is very different from any other ad. Thus the ad is a treat for people with difference filter while ignores people with sameness filter. The ad shows gradual change in the mood of the gorilla. Initially it is calm and relaxed. Then it enjoys the feeling of pleasure and moves on to feel the energy. This occasional change of feelings at a normal pace adheres to people with progress filter. 9. Past, Present and Future. The ad uses a song (In the air tonight, by Phil Collins) that was composed in 1981. It was a big hit then. Thus people with past filter can relate to this song and will thus relate to CDM. The gorilla shown in the ad is both active and spontaneous. He seems to be enjoying the moment. These traits are in sync with people having present filter. The ad concept is very imaginative as it shows a gorilla enjoying music and playing drums. Moreover it generates a sense of anticipation in the viewer’s mind as to what would be coming next. By 1900, majority of the Japanese immigrants living in US were concentrated in Hawaii where their work force was much sought by both the farm owners and industries owners. Japanese were primarily hard working than whites, and since the payments depended on the amount of work done, they were better placed than the whites. Their outstanding reputation spread and overtook the whites substantially. The whites saw the Japanese as formidable competitors, and their presence was a threat to them. The Japanese grew more powerful, and in 1941, they attacked the Pearl Harbor; an act that marked a significant traumatic landmark in Japanese-American history (Niiya 11). This attack brought about relocation and internment of the Japanese by the angry anti Japanese community. Japanese-American immigration Japanese migration is significantly attributed to the establishment of sugar plantations in Hawaii . These sugar plantations required massive number of workers throughout the entire process of cultivation, harvesting and processing in the industries. This establishment called for many laborers and importing them was the most convenient way of getting cheap labor. In 1850s, plantation owners imported many Chinese to work in their farms and offered them meager salaries. By 1865, the Chinese immigrants started to drift away from these jobs slowly until there were no more enough laborers in the farms. With the shifting of Chinese to other better jobs, the Hawaiians foreign minister decided to seek laborers elsewhere. This decision compelled the migration of Japanese to Hawaii to replace the Chinese who had quit working in the farms. In 1868, the first ship carrying Japanese immigrants arrived with 148 people in whom 141 were men, 6 were women, and two were children (Hanel 7). The working conditions were harsh and upon the termination of the contract; thus, some went back claiming tha t they were treated with so much cruelty. However, the remaining Japanese were the beginning of Japanese-American citizens at the time. The Chinese exclusion act, which was passed in 1882, prohibited further migration of Chinese and paved way for further Japanese immigration. In the preceding years, Japan and Hawaii signed a contract that allowed whites to import Japanese laborers. More and more Japanese immigrants occupied Hawaii and a group of Japanese ancestry arose. The native born Japanese by 1910 had grown up to one third of the total Hawaii’s population. By 1930, the native born Japanese in Hawaii was numerous and exceeded those born in Japan by a great percentage. They continued to work hard in the farms, and their skills consequently outweighed that of Native Americans bringing a stiff competition. Through their efforts, they were finally able to purchase their own lands, and this challenged the Native Americans who perceived them as a threat. Factors that contribute d to Japanese-Americans internment The internment of Japanese was marked by the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The attack sprouted a historical landmark amongst American Japanese (Chin 5). Retaliation by the anti Japanese ran high and brought their internment.
